Speaker Biography
Michael Callan

Mr. Callan is a thirty eight year veteran of the Fire Service. He served as a Captain with the Wallingford, Connecticut Fire Department for 20 years. In 2010 he was the recipient of the prestigious Norman Y. Mineta Excellence in Transportation Award. The Mineta Award is given annually by the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) to an individual or team that made a significant and lasting contribution to the safety of people, products and materials in transit. In 2001 he was selected as the California Hazardous Materials Instructor of the Year. Michael Callan is the author of the book Responding to Utility Emergencies used extensively by the Utilities Industries for training emergency responders and used as a traditional textbook and interactive training program called RTUE Online. He is the author of Pipeline Emergency Response DVD. He is also author of the popular Street Smart Haz Mat Response by Red Hat Publications. Michael Callan is one of the lead instructors / mentors in the Virtual Terrorism Response Academy (VTRA) developed by Dartmouth University's Interactive Media Lab. The VTRA is a reusable advanced distance learning environment that supports the development and dissemination of terrorism response courseware. In 1989 at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Cincinnati he was selected from 7000 municipal and private sector instructors, as the International Society of Fire Instructors' - George D. Post Instructor of the Year. He is developer of traditional and interactive training modules for delivering the Department of Transportation / Pipeline Safety and Hazardous Materials Administration’s Pipeline Emergencies Training. Pipeline Emergencies is distributed by the National Association of Fire Marshals nationally to every state fire service training organization. Mr. Callan has conducted over twenty five Training the Trainers throughout the United States. Mr. Callan is also the developer of the widely adopted Propane Emergencies Training Facilitator’s Guide and PowerPoint programs used extensively by the US Fire Service. The training program has been adopted by more than 30 state training fire schools for propane emergencies. He is the lead instructor on the video training series by Emergency Resources Inc. - "Surviving the Hazardous Materials Incident". He is co-author of Hazardous Materials Exposures - Emergency Response and Patient Care published by Brady and Prentice Hall.

His Company Callan and Company conducts safety, chemical and emergency response training around the country for Industrial and Municipal Haz-Mat Teams. He lists as clients, corporations such as Sprint, Pacific Gas and Electric, Pipeline Association for Public Awareness, ComEd, Excel Energy, SCANA, Northeast Utilities, Louisiana Pacific, Duke Energy, General Motors, Phillips Petroleum, Morton International, The Stanley Works, Ensign-National Association of State Fire Marshals, Bickford Industries, Bristol Meyers, Merck, ATF, Kennedy Space Center, Dupont and IBM. In Addition, he has been training emergency responders for 38 years throughout the United States and Canada.
